The story

On a cold day in January 1938, two men climb into their race cars. They are about to attempt to set the world land speed record on the newly constructed German autobahn amid the tumultuous backdrop of Hitler’s pre-war Germany.

Rudolf Caracciola and Bernd Rosemeyer are exceptional Grand Prix drivers, but one is a devout Nazi and is committed to Hitler’s purge. The other holds a secret so scandalous it would mean certain death. Only one driver survives the record attempt.

The cars look like rocket ships since aerodynamics are still being developed and understood.  German automotive artisans from Mercedes and Auto Union have forged aluminum and sheet metal with their hands to create these incredibly fast, but dangerous cars that can reach over 250Mph.

Passion, honor, and greed set the tone of each man’s quest to be the best, both on the track and in the eyes of their mutual love interest, the daughter of the Colonel General who is plotting to eliminate Hitler.

Brimming with automotive action, real history, intrigue, love, and skullduggery, Race to War casts a spell as it tells the story of power, intrigue, and what it means to be a man of purpose and self-sacrifice.

About greg

Greg van den Dries is a tech entrepreneur, amateur sports car driver, musician, cyclist, foodie and a proud father. He grew up in a car racing, Air Force family in San Antonio, Texas. His father was a B-17 pilot and a POW in WWII.

The story was inspired by the design of the Mercedes Rekoardwagen, an amazing car of the 1930’s pre-war era. While the technology of the time was limited compared to today, the cars and drivers were able to accomplish incredible feats including the fastest speed ever recorded on the German Autobahn at 432 kilometers per hour (268Mph). The speed was recorded by Rudolf Caracciola on the stretch just before his accident. This is the highest recorded speed on a motorway.

Greg can be found holding a fork or behind a steering wheel in Miami Beach, Florida.
